Kathy King, RDN, LD, FAND, started her private practice in 1972, and founded Helm Publishing in 1991 to meet the need in the nutrition continuing education market for offerings on prevention, integrative nutrition, entrepreneurship, and sports. She has drawn on her varied contributions and accomplishments in the field to make Helm Publishing the robust and reliable resource it is today.
Kathy is a pioneer with decades of experience in entrepreneurial nutrition. She was founder of one of the first private nutrition practices in the US, the first NFL team nutritionist (Denver Broncos), nutritionist for two early Denver corporate wellness programs, Coors & Gates, one of the first RDNs to be a media spokesperson for healthier foods, and one of the first spa nutritionists.
Kathy has counseled more than 6,000 patients. She is the publisher, author, or editor of 23 books, including The Entrepreneurial Nutritionist, Nutrition Therapy, The Competitive Edge, Pediatric Nutrition 2nd-4th editions, and over a thousand CE courses.
A popular speaker and respected media spokesperson, Kathy was the nutritionist for ReachMD, and has given over 800 presentations and 620 media interviews including four years as the Denver NBC-TV. She was a guest on ABC’s “Nightline,” and hosted her own nationally syndicated nutrition radio talk show on American Know-how. She has presented educational lectures in Japan, Israel, Germany, South Africa, Australia, Canada, and the Philippines.
Kathy is passionate about using her broad and varied experience to help nutrition professionals develop satisfying and meaningful careers that positively impact the lives of others. She was President of the Colorado Dietetic Association, Director of the Council on Practice, and member of the Academy’s Board of Directors and House of Delegates. As an indication of her commitment and passion, Kathy has received the following awards: Citizen of the Year - Lake Cities Chamber of Commerce; Alumni of the Year - CSU Department of Health and Human Services, Colorado State University; and Medallion Award - Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Helm Publishing and its staff are very passionate about giving back to our profession, communities, and global needs. We volunteer and support those with food insecurity, like World Central Kitchen, Feeding America, and our local food pantries. We also support cancer, Alzheimer’s and macular degeneration charities, as well as Doctors Without Borders, Disabled American Veterans, and the American Red Cross. As an alumni of Colorado State University, our founder, Kathy, has also contributed to the sports nutrition curriculum. We try to be conscious stewards of our environment, and to date have donated 500 trees to the National Wildlife Federation, and we support National Parks, National Geographic, Ocean Conservancy, National Audubon, and Defenders of Wildlife. Personally and in our mail order office, we work to cut down on paper use, reduce/reuse/recycle everything we can (we hate to see a good box go to waste), and have been life-long tree huggers.
A nutrition professional is a special kind of person, with scientific knowledge, culinary knowhow, and a strong sense of empathy and humanity.
